How to choose a viscometer for your laboratory

Turn your sample, test method and reporting needs into a practical shortlist, with examples from the Measight SNB, STM and SYA ranges.

A useful instrument shortlist starts with the result your laboratory needs to report. Before comparing screens or maximum ranges, write down the method, units and conditions that make a result acceptable to your customer. Manufacturer selection guidance also treats the existing method and comparison conditions as starting points. [1]

Start with the required result

Use the previous test report or purchasing specification as a brief. For Measight inquiries, distinguish a dynamic-viscosity result in mPa·s, a Stormer consistency result in KU, and a kinematic-viscosity result in mm²/s. We can then discuss the SNB rotational, STM Stormer or SYA kinematic families. An instrument name alone does not establish that it reproduces an existing procedure.

If there is no existing method, describe the decision you want to make: accept a production batch, compare incoming material or investigate a formulation. These are useful starting questions for an application discussion, rather than reasons to purchase the largest model automatically.

Compare the SNB configurations

The SNB-1 lists four speeds: 6, 12, 30 and 60 rpm. The SNB-2 adds 0.3, 0.6, 1.5 and 3 rpm. The SNB-3 also includes 0.1 rpm. Each lists Nos. 1–4 as standard spindles and a 2.8-inch color IPS display.

Their catalog range envelopes are respectively 1–100,000, 1–2,000,000 and 1–6,000,000 mPa·s. In all three, the 1 mPa·s lower limit requires the optional No. 0 spindle / low-viscosity adapter. The usable interval depends on the selected spindle and speed. Ask us to identify the working configuration for your method; a range envelope is only an initial filter.

Check what the complete setup includes

For the SNB models, the catalog lists 250–400 mL sample volume and optional PT100 temperature measurement over 0–200 °C. The probe measures temperature; it does not control it. Include any needed temperature-control equipment in the inquiry.

If your laboratory has only a small aliquot available, state that at the start. Request the specific chamber, spindle and fill volume rather than assuming that a smaller beaker is an equivalent substitute. Also confirm the supplied electrical configuration: the current SNB entries list AC 220 V ±10%, 50 Hz.

Send a concise application brief

For example, “incoming coating QC, existing method attached, two samples per batch” is a more useful opening brief than “please quote a digital viscometer.” Add the missing technical details in the same message. We can use this brief to compare configurations before you commit to a model.

Common questions

Is the widest viscosity range always the best choice?

No. Start with the required method and working conditions. A catalog range combines multiple spindle and speed configurations; confirm a suitable configuration for your samples.

What should I send with an instrument inquiry?

Send your sample description, existing test method, expected viscosity and units, temperature, available volume and reporting requirements. Include a previous test report if available.
